CONCEPTS: Housing Competition
Monterey County, CA  Fall 2002

This proposal envisions a solution for housing unaccompanied single-sex migrant farm workers in Monterey County. The foundational idea is to provide safe, clean and affordable housing for this transitory population. The basic unit of housing is a grouping of five structures that form a small community group or cluster: 3 sleeping structures, 1 communal hall and 1 bath unit. These buildings are conceived of as prefabricated constructions, which are brought to a site on a flatbed trailer (wide load), unpacked and assembled on site with the aid of a mobile construction crane. The pre-manufacturing of the building components allows for an economy in the means of fabrication and additional savings based on the repeatable final product.  The moderate climatic zone of Monterey County allows for an open relationship to the environment, creating an assembly of ad hoc enclosures which engage with this dramatic agricultural landscape.
