Matarozzi/Pelsinger Builders Office
San Francisco, CA 2002

This renovation of a glass warehouse into a contractor’s office sought to pare back the existing qualities of the warehouse space (cubic volume, battered hemlock floors) and create a zen-like working space for the principals and employees. Glass was used as a primary material, both to evoke the building’s history and to render a matrix of interlocking workspaces. Sustainable practices were employed throughout, such as the use of “green” materials and the employment of rooftop photovoltaic panels. The exterior treatment is one of stealth insertions behind existing sliding warehouse doors, a technique that respects the existing (coarse) neighboring context while it camouflages the (refined) nature of the inner realm.
