Bar + Restaurant Renovation
San Francisco, CA 2005
The owners of CAV asked us to create an upscale wine bar out of a tired Market Street restaurant spaceon a very strict budget. As a process of erasure, we peeled away the heavy molding and large non-bearing column structures to reveal more clearly the dog-leg plan of the space. To save money and time, we kept this existing floor plan essentially intact, but gave every surface new life. Acid-green walls were skim-coated smooth and repainted a soft white. Carpeting was replaced with a continuous plane of wenge wood flooring, which wrapped up a side wall to form a long banquette and the face of the new bar. The formerly (green) formica bar was extended and its top clad in zinc. New furniture includes custom zinc-clad tables and mahogany chairs and stools. New custom lighting fixtures, designed by envelope A+D, are distributed throughout the space lending a crisp utility while providing a gentle ambient light.
